Pathogenic Bacteria are responsible for many of the common types of potentially fatal water-borne diseases around the world. They are often found in unchlorinated, private water supplies, and stored water. Stored water, whether it is in a water tank or a bottle, is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. It does not take long for the bacteria to multiply sufficiently to reach infective dose (disease causing) levels.
Doulton® Water Filters have been proven by independent laboratory testing to be highly effective against pathogenic bacteria.

Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other cysts
Water borne cysts such as cryptosporidium and giardia are common in water supplies all over the world. They can be found in human and animal feces, and therefore relatively easy find their way into water supplies. They have a very low infective dose, meaning, very little has to be ingested to make you ill. They cause problems in the stomach and digestive tract, and can create life-threatening diarrhea.
Water borne cysts are resistant to chlorine and other chemicals, so traditional water treatments are not sufficient to guard against outbreaks. These cysts have hard casings, allowing them to be able to survive their environment for long periods of time.
Cyst removal requires absolute filtration of less than 1 micron (1 thousandth of a millimetre.)
Doulton® water filters have absolute filtration ratings of 0.9 microns. This has been proven to be more than sufficient to remove most cysts. Independently testing has shown to remove >99.999% of cryptosporidium, giardia and other cysts.

Chlorine (odor and taste)
In many areas of the world, chlorine is added to the water in order to disinfect the water and minimize bacteria growth in the main water supply. Chlorine is extremely effective at killing bacteria, but unfotunately there are a number of drawbacks to it's use.
-
Dead bacteria are NOT removed from the water.
-
Chlorine can react with organics in the water to produce trihalomethanes (THMs). These are known carcinogens.
-
Chlorine has an unpleasant taste.
Activated Carbon is the best way to remove chlorine from your drinking water. Doulton's® Ultracarb filters combine the benefits of the ceramic filter with added activated carbon to remove unwanted chlorine.
Rust, Silt and Other Particles
Raw water taken from sources other than a main water supplier are most generally heavy in particulate matter of rust, silt, and other particles that may not be visible to the naked eye. Despite the best efforts of water treatment facilities, there is still some particulate contamination coming from the main water supply, even if it is not visible to the naked eye. Doulton water filters are the most economical filter to use in situations of heavy particulate matter, because the ceramic shell can be cleaned of the particulates, and the water filter is restored to it's original flow.
Independent testing has verified that Doulton® water filters effectively remove >99.99% of particulate that is 0.9 microns or larger. For water with heavy particle contamination, a pre-filter should be fitted before the ceramic filter. This will prevent premature clogging of the ceramic filter.
