How the Doulton Water Filter Works

Doulton ceramic filters are capable of converting raw water into high quality drinking water. They comply with the most stringent potable water standards, all 100% naturally.
Doulton Ceramic Water Filters are Certified under the National Sanitation Foundation. NSF standards 42 and 53.
Doulton Ultracarb and Imperial Ultracarb use 4- Stage water filtration

Doulton Super Sterasyl uses 3- Stage water Filtration (No ion-exchange resin for lead removal)

First Stage- Doulton ultracarb sterasyl ceramic provides sub micron filtration. The ceramic shell filters out fine particulate matter, bacteria, cysts and turbidity.

Second stage- Doulton impregnates silver within the ceramic structure. This gives Doulton filter systems bacteriostatic and self sterilizing properties.

Third Stage- An inner core of activated carbon block removes chlorine and organic compounds by adsorption.

Fourth Stage- Ion exchange resin reduces Lead and other heavy metals. (Doulton Ultracarb water filter and Imperial Ultracarb water filter only.)

1st stage of water filtration- Ceramic Shell Filters out particles and pathogens

All Doulton ceramic water filter elements are based on an outer shell of Sterasyl Ceramic. They each utilize various types of core materials for different applications.

Why a Ceramic water filter?

Ceramic has a small and complex pore structure, making it an ideal filter medium. Doulton water filters use a patented ceramic technology that allows them to accurately control the pore structure of of each ceramic filter. Their technology ensures excellent product consistency.

  • Ceramic is a highly effective barrier to particles and pathogens: The ceramic shell is made of diatoms. Diatoms are a type of algae that weave microscopic shells used for protection and locomotion. These shells have a pattern of tiny holes so regular, that any deviation in pattern signifies a different species. As diatoms die their shells survive, when bodies of water dry up huge deposits of "diatomaceous earth" are mined. The porous shell created using diatomaceous earth can trap particles down to .22 of a micron (1/100,000 of an inch.) laboratories consider water filtered up to .45 of a micron to be bacteriologically sterile, and .45 to 1.0 bacteriologically safe. Doulton drinking water filters have a pore structure which has an Absolute filtration rating (defined as >99.99%) of 0.9 microns (less than 1000 th of a millimetre). Therefore, the ceramic is capable of removing sub micron particles and pathogenic bacteria from drinking water.

A recent study by a leading UK University showed that use of our ceramic drinking water filters in a community in Zimbabwe slashed cases of potentially fatal diarrhea (a common problem in Africa caused by pathogenic bacteria and cysts in the water supply) to virtually zero. Our water filters have been proven to work in the most demanding conditions. This is why they are used by many major aid organizations

  • Long life: Doulton ceramic drinking water filters may be cleaned in order to prolong the life of the product. Using a brush, the outer layer of ceramic can be brushed away revealing a new layer. In this way, the filter can be re-used rather than replaced, giving it a much longer life-span than many other products on the market. Especially helpful when filtering water with heavy sediment. Most other water filters must be replaced when "clogging" of the filter occurs.

  • Natural: Doulton's ceramics are made from 100% natural elements. They do not add anything to the water they filter. This contributes to Doulton's ability to pass the stringent NSF® testing procedures. Many other filter products add traces of chemicals to the water they filter.

2nd-Stage of filtration- Silver Sterilization

Re-growth of bacteria trapped in the water filter, and then recontaminating the water is a common problem among most water filters. Doulton water filters are impregnated with trace amounts of natural silver. On contact with water, positively charged ions from the silver are released and taken into the enzyme system of the bacterias cell, nuetralizes it. Silver is known to be as powerful of a disinfectant as a chemical disinfectant when it comes to bacteria, mold, algae and other primitive life forms. The silver inhibits any microbiological re-growth of the trapped particles and pathogens in the ceramic shell. There is no need to sterilize Doulton ceramic filters, even if they are used over an extended period of time.

3rd-Stage of filtration- Carbon Adsorption

The Doulton Ultracarb has a solid carbon block insert. Carbon is a natural element, and because of its pore structure, has a tremendous surface area. For comparison, one teaspoon of carbon has the surface area of a football field! The carbon element removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon called "Adsorption". The result is the attraction of substances to the surface of the carbon media, while water passes on. Activated Carbon is highly effective at removing substances that effect the tast, odor and quality of our water such as chlorine, its by-products (THM's), Volatile Organic Compounds (carbon based VOC's) and many other man-made and naturally occuring contaminants including but not limited to:

  • alachlor
  • atrazine
  • benzene
  • carbofuran
  • carbon tetrachloride
  • chlorobenzene
  • 2,4-D
  • dibromochloropropane (DBCP)
  • O, P-dechlorobenzines
  • forms of dichloroethylens
  • 1, 2-dechloropropane
  • cis-1,3-dichloropropylene
  • toxaphene
  • chlordane
  • radon
  • lindane
  • simazine
  • PCB's
  • toluene
  • xylenes etc., etc.

4th-stage filtration- ion exchange resin (Doulton Ultracarb and Imperial Ultracarb only)

The addition of an ion exchange resin at the core of the Doulton Ultracarb allows the filter to reduce lead and other harmful metals.
